Hair scrunching tips please!!?

I would really like to scrunch my hair for school sometime. I have brown wavy thick hair that comes just past my shoulders. I've been doing some reading and people say that you have to wash your hair first, when I wash my hair I get alot of flyaways at the top of my head so I'm wondering if this will work:

1: Wet the ends of my hair

2: get some moose and scrunch it in my fists rolling up to my head.

3: scrunch until done then add some hairspray and let is dry.

Is this right will it work?

Im also concerned about the buildup will this make my hair look greasy or plastered with product or make it not soft?

How much moose and hairspray do I use?

Finally, do I leave it dry first scrunch it more then add hairsray or can I add hairspray while its still damp?

I know this is alot of questions but I just want to be sure Im doing it right! Thanks to any help at all, anyone who answers with details will get 10 points!!! PLease and thank you (comments are also welcome if you have some) :)

Yes, that should work fine, but also try.........

Shampoo and condition your hair. When finishing, do your last rinse with cold water. Squeeze the excess water out. To scrunch it, you want it damp but not soaking wet or dripping.

Wrap your hair in a small towel (for thin hair leave on a few minutes, for thick hair up to 20 minutes). Do not rub your hair at all with the towel. What you can do is wring it within the towel if the ends are still dripping. Run your fingers with a wide-tooth comb through your hair and make a part as best as you can. Don't worry if it's not perfect! Use hairspray. Put it near the middle and bottom of your hair. Putting it too close to your roots will cause it to look greasy and weighed down.

Turn your head upside down so that your hair is hanging down. This step is optional and some prefer to skip it. Helps give volume and a more even scrunch. Put gel/mousse in your hands and rub them together to spread the gel/mousse.

Grab a small handful of hair by the ends and push it up toward the head. Hold it in place for a few moments while aiming the hair dryer at it to 'set' the gel/mousse/hair spray.

Repeat this all over your head, reapplying the gel every time. Keep in mind that small handfuls yield tighter waves and large handfuls create full, loose waves. If you choose to air-dry your hair instead of using a blow dryer, scrunch it a few times and leave it ALONE! If you mess with it too much it will cause FRIZZ. Do not rush the steps or rush to dry it. Letting it dry by itself is a way to leave it with a wet look.

Tips

Fine/thin, naturally straight, or chemically-straightened hair may be resistant to scrunching. If this is the case, apply curl-defining mousse or gel to the hair and curl it using a barrel iron. For best results, use shampoo, conditioner, and products (gel, mousse, hairspray, etc.) that specifically define curls. Take a shower at night. Then apply the mousse and spray. Go to sleep with your hair still slightly wet. When you wake up, your hair will be wavy. To perfect it, get your hair slightly wet all over. Make sure you avoid getting your roots wet. Reapply mousse and spray and you're done.

If it only works from the middle of your hair down, put it in a regular ponytail. Make sure that your hair isn't completely dry or completely wet -- keep it damp. Always press your hair with a towel.

Warnings

Gel isn't usually the best thing to use in your hair. If you put in too much, it makes your hair look crunchy and wet. Try applying mousse then spraying your hair with a curl defining spray. Shaking your head upside down might make your hair look frizzy and puffy. You should always try to avoid shaking your head upside down a lot. Don't put too much gel in your hair in one spot because once it dries, it will turn white and flaky. Don't even think about brushing your hair after you've scrunched it! You will look like you got electrocuted.

Things You'll Need

Mousse or gel(mousse works better)

Hairspray

Hair dryer

no it won't leave build up as long as you don't use too much hairspray. using mouse after you towel dry your hair still leaving some water in it ,scrunching and hairsraying should do the trick. also suave is cheap but it works.

no you have to wet all of it then put some pomade in it to control the flyaways. then you put about half a palmful of mousse per each side of your hair. then scrunch it use a good amount of hairspray. add the spray while its still wet. I hope this helps :)

We have very similar hair types!

Anyways, I always take a shower before I scrunch my hair. I find it easier to work when my hair is damp. As soon as you get out of the shower, run a wide tooth comb in your hair. Dry your hair with a towel by squeezing it. Don't rub it all over! This creates crazy frizzy hair!

Then, use a curling gel. I use Pantene ProV. You have to see how much is the right amount. If you use too much, your hair looks a little crunchy. Anyways, apply that to your hair and scrunch it.

Allow it to dry. When you're done you can put a little amount of hairspray just to hold things together.

If you have a lot of flyaways you can buy a smoothing serum. With this you apply about a dime size amount in your hands, rub them together and apply it to your roots. This smooths down the flyaways.

Also, have you ever considered a diffuser after you scrunch and it's still damp? This helps me a lot!

Good luck! You'll eventually get it right.

When I used to scrunch my hair I always started with wet hair first. I used to use Aussie Scrunch spray and start at the bottom and work my way to the top. I would spray each section of hair I was working on then scrunch, working my way around until my entire head was done. I also let my hair air dry - never used a hair dryer.

Also, be sure you spray with hairspray once you finish scrunching. This will help ensure your hair stays the way you finished it.

Best of luck - hope I was some help.

I have wavy hair too. On the day I wash it, I towel dry it, don't rub too much, that causes the fly away ends, then I put Matrix Biolage gelee on my fingertips and work it thru my hair, then scrunch and dry with a defuser on your hair dryer. The next day (or sometimes two) you can just spray your hair with plain water in a spray bottle, and put a little of the gelee in the ends scrunching it up.I don't even need hairspray to hold and it looks almost as good as the day you wash it.

Also, fly aways can be from the kind of shampoo and/or conditioner you use.

If it is a real problem,I heard instead of towel drying, use a baby diaper, sounds weird ,and I have never tried it but it was a tip I read in some magazine!
